Southern Italy, Day VIII: Cefalu

February 1st, Day 8:

*bum bum buummm* CEFALU! (It's for views like this that I wish my life had a John Williams soundtrack attached.) Thanks to Connie, the day began on the roof of our hotel to survey our area of analysis... we couldn't get into our studio space at city hall until midday, so my group decided to take advantage of the morning and get some documenting done.

Here's the view from our roof in the other direction.

The rocks extending out into the sea near Club Med.

The sea wall, rocks, and beach as seen from the roof.

First, our group made our way down the lungomare, trying to figure out the vast tract of land (aka the Superblock) just adjacent to our hotel. Here's a shot of the majestic Hotel Tourist after coming down from the roof..

A horse in the superblock, right next to a construction site.

A waterfront hotel being constructed on the site.

"Beware of the dog"... what sort of vicious creature could warrant such an intimidating warning?

This one! We were scared for our lives, I swear.

A Superblock driveway.

Another private drive in our area of analysis.

Will and a doorway to a very surburban-looking parking lot.

The newer section of Cefalu along Via Roma.

We were exploring a thoroughly unpleasant pedestrian shopping space when an English-speaking local (Cefaluian? Cefalujian? Cefalite?) recognized us from the newspaper... this is him informing us that we are officially famous.

After receiving our studio space (a circular room with 3-story high ceilings and walls draped with old stage backdrops), my group convened and then set out in the city to work more once we had figured out what information we needed. Connie and I explored an interesting block near the sea with an interesting collection of buildings with no regard for the site or for each other... this was to be our example of urban design as a problem present in the expansion of Cefalu. While in the process of doing this, we met a vegetable vendor who knew some English, and we chatted with him a while.

Priceless...

The overgrown, inaccessible space in the center of our block.

The beach directly in front of our block.

Some flowers in the main piazza of the city.

After an afternoon of working, we were free to do what we wanted for dinner, so of course we went back to the hotel to drink some wine and prosecco in the empty bar. And, like Rick's in Casablanca, everybody comes to Il Vicoletto... that's right, two nights in a row. Not a bad thing at all, but certainly interesting after taking full advantage of our makeshift happy hour. The following are some pictures outside the restaurant... the first I had to post because it was just too funny not to...

...and the second is just a good one of Vikki, Amy, Connie, and Mo.

Most of our group ended up eating here, with everyone at one long table, and me, Vikki, Mo, Jake and Brian at the kids' table. Here's Mo and I rocking our white sweaters. From what I recall, it was a fun dinner... Vikki and I got into a flash fight with our cameras which ended with me trying to hide between an empty jug of wine... fun for the whole family! A nice end to another day in Cefalu.
